The Marine Education Trust (MET) offers a fresh
approach to environmental education through three core principles:
Improving understanding of the
marine environment is key to promoting its conservation.
Engaging young people through
involvement in challenging marine-based activities builds
confidence and life skills.
Educated and informed stakeholders
will make the right choices about the sustainable development
of their own marine resources.
We believe that a better understanding of their local coasts
and seas leads people to work to protect these environments,
and so improving their awareness of, and involvement with, the
oceans is vital to effective conservation messages.
Hand in hand with this learning, we also seek to address social
issues amongst young people by using the sea as a tool for capturing
their interest, building confidence and developing life skills.
Lastly, we aid the development of existing conservation NGOs
by providing training and networking opportunities for environmental
educators, and helping other staff members gain the experience
and qualifications they need to help their organisations move
forward.
'The
reason I love the sea I cannot explain - it's physical. When
you dive you begin to feel like an angel. It's a liberation
of your weight'.
